Did you know Conroe, Texas is the only Conroe in the world? Thats right
Conroe has been around since 1884 and was named after Isaac Conroe when the first post office was established. For some time in the late 1800s, Conroe was the only junction of major rail lines in the county. More and more settlers came during a lumber boom in 1889 and by 1892 Conroe became a shipping center for lumber, cotton, livestock and bricks. Conroe continued to grow until the Great Depression when many residents were forced to leave.
George W. Strake discovered oil just outside of town and things started to turn around for Conroe almost immediately. In fact, this discovery triggered an oil boom in the country and Conroe had more millionaires per capita than any other town in the US. During this time, US Highway 75 was paved and the Creighton Theatre was built on the courthouse square.
Conroe today is continuing to grow with plans to annex smaller surrounding communities. Conroe ISD, once the wealthiest ISD in the state, includes schools in Conroe, The Woodlands, Oak Ridge and Magnolia. The Conroe Courier newspaper is a valuable resource to these areas as well.
Two of the main attractions in the City of Conroe are the Conroe Outlet Mall and Lake Conroe. Lake Conroe offers weekend getaways as well as neighborhoods to call home. The Conroe Outlet Mall offers many name brand stores with discounted and wholesale clothing, shoes, toys and house wares.
