Deer Park, Texas is named after the large number of deer that roamed the Gulf plains. Founded in 1892 by Simeon Henry West, Deer Park has seen increases and decreases in population. However, when the area became a site of refineries in 1946, the area began to prosper. The citizens of Deer Park voted to incorporate December 12, 1948. Some weeks later, Earl E. Dunn became the first mayor and officiated over the first council meeting of February 7.
Taking education very seriously, the town, governed by a city manager-council system, approved a plan to develop educational opportunities in 1961. Deer Park and surrounding communities have supported the San Jacinto Junior College since its opening in 1961.
Deer Park celebrated its 100th birthday in 1992. Today, Deer Park has roughly 9,000 homes and more than 30,000 residents; a city hall; a 14 campuses school district; a library; community theater; municipal court building; two fire stations; numerous parks and recreational facilities; state-of-the-art water and sewer processing facilities; a post office; several hotels; railroad; 14 major industries as well as several smaller light industrial companies and a new police facility
Fun Fact: Luella is the only originally named street remaining today. |
