Pasadena Texas was founded in 1893 by John H. Burnett and because of its lush vegetation the area was named after Pasadena, California. Following the Galveston hurricane of 1900, Clara Barton, of the American Red Cross, purchased 1½ million strawberry plants for the Gulf Coast farmers. Pasadena quickly established itself as the strawberry capital of the region. In addition to strawberries, the Pasadena farmers were also known for their cantaloupes, cape jasmine flowers and cucumbers.
Conversion from a farming economy to an industrial economy did not take place until the late 1930s, when the war in Europe spurred a major increase in the ship-channel industries. After annexing several smaller communities, the Pasadena population has grown very large with most of the residents finding employment linked with the ship-channel industries, Bayport Industrial District and the Johnson Space Center of Houston.
Fun Fact: The Pasadena Historical Museum, Bay Area Museum, Armand Bayou Nature Center, Pasadena Rodeo, and San Jacinto Strawberry Festival are major tourist attractions.
