Sugarland Texas was home to Oakland Plantation of the Williams Brothers. The plantation originally started producing cotton, corn and sugarcane. Later, the brother's established a raw sugar mill, but sold the plantation ten years later. After some time, E.H. Cunningham invested more than $1 million in a sugar refinery, a new raw-sugar mill, a paper mill and railroad to attract people to the town.
In 1908, Imperial Sugar came to Sugarland and the population increased and decreased over the next two decades. With the Great Depression the town lost residents. In 1946 the Kempner family became sole owners of the town. The town was incorporated in 1959, a year after Imperial Sugar and Sugarland Properties, Incorporated, also owned by the Kempner family, began selling the businesses, homes, and land for development. |
