Houston Family Arts Center celebrates this miracle with a stunning production of The Miracle Worker. Opening weekends April 26 through May 10 at the Berry Center Theatre, 8877 Barker Cypress Road, this classic drama tells the story of the relationship between the deaf and blind Keller and Annie Sullivan, the teacher who brought the almost feral girl into the world of learning. Mark Twain, an admirer of both women, dubbed Sullivan a ‘miracle worker’ providing the inspiration for the name of Gibson’s book.
Gifted young actress Mallory Bechtel portrays the troubled Helen Keller, imprisoned in a world of darkness, unable to communicate with the outside. Kelly Killgore is the tough as nails Annie Sullivan whose persistence in trying to reach Helen is the one thing that redeems her own soul.
And if experiencing a heart warming show isn’t enough, HFAC is donating $1 from every ticket sold to the DeafBlind Children’s Fund, which pays for interveners like Annie Sullivan for children who are deaf and blind. The Dunn triplets, Sophie, Emma and Zoe, who live right in our own backyard in Spring, TX, are recipients of the very first intervener paid by the DeafBlind Children’s Fund. All Performances will be captioned.

OPENING WEEKEND UPDATE:
The Miracle Worker did not open to a sold out show, but certainly should have. The story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan is a touching story that will have younger children asking questions about deaf and blindness and adults leaving the theatre thankful for the minor problems they have. The storyline is easy to follow, although Annie has several flashbacks that smaller children might not understand. The actors do a beautiful job of making the audience feel frusterated, hopeless, lost, determined and finally triumphant. There are few dry eyes when Helen finally makes sense of the word water.
Houston Family Arts Center has once again cast talented actors to tell a story families will love. Get your tickets and take your friends. It is a show you do not want to miss.
