Jean Valjean, released from jail for stealing bread, assumes another identity and begins a new life, working his way up to the post of mayor of acountry town. By disappearing, he neglects the terms of his ticket of leave, and the obsessed policeman Javert vows to track him to the ends of the earth. Meanwhile, the tragic Fantine dies, and Valjean adopts her daughter, Cosette, by stealing her away from her foster parents, the evil innkeepers, the Thenardiers. As the play jumps forward in time, the handsome student Marius falls in love with the now grown Cosette. When revolution breaks out, Javert and Valjean find themselves confronting each other. When Valjean spares the policeman's life, Javert goes mad, unable to comprehend this man who he has hunted for years. He takes his own life, and Valjean, now an old man, finally finds peace.

OPENING NIGHT UPDATE

The Houston Family Arts Center found some of the most talented teenagers and children to perform in their rendition of Les Miserables: Student Edition.  With 100% of the dialogue performed as songs, the actors and actresses have some very large voices to fill as Les Miserable is the longest running show ever...and everyone stepped up to the plate with great success.    Costumes are excellent, set design is excellent and the story is of course timeless.

For parents with younger children, keep in mind, the student edition still includes most of the storyline, including desperate mother Fantine finding herself as a prostitute and the death of many of the characters in the final battle scene; although most of these parts will be over their heads.   Language is also strong with several references to hell and several uses of the word d*mn.  Since everything is in song, most of the words will not be noticed by kids anyway.

Overall, Les Miserable: Student Edition is a wonderful treat for families, especially families with pre-teens or teenagers.
