DESCRIPTION:

The Pinkalicious and Purplicious books are not the fun loving, sweet books the titles might suggest, and although the titles are similar, the books do not have much in common other than the main character.

Pinkalicious starts with a little girl who loves the color pink.  Her mother makes her some very pink cupcakes, from which she develops pinkatitis and turns pink herself.  Calling herself Pinkerella, she does not take the doctor's advice to eat more green foods and sneaks more pink cupcakes, turning her red.  After a fast binge of veggies, she finally turns back to her normal color, only to find her little brother has eaten the pink cupcakes and is now pink himself.  This story would have been really cute, had the children not been such brats.  The little girl argues with her mother and pitches a fit when she does not get her way, not to mention sneaks the cupcakes after her mother and father have told her not to.  The positive message may be to make sure you eat plenty of vegetables to stay healthy, but this message is way over kids’ heads.

Purplicous has the same pink loving little girl, but since she loves pink so much, she starts getting made fun of at school.  None of the other girls like pink anymore, they love black and make fun of anyone who likes pink. When she meets another little girl who mixes pink with blue to make purple in art class, it is purplicious.  Again, the positive message to like what you like and not care what anyone else says is way over kids’ heads.  The mean girls at school just reinforce the bullying nature kids have.  The only time this book is appropriate is if a child is being bullied at school for being different.

Children act up enough on their own and parents certainly don't want to read about another misbehaving child.  There are many other books that reinforce positive behavior without introducing the negative behaviors as well.
