DIRECTIONS
1. Choose a pumpkin. Look for pumpkins that are big, ripe, smooth and have at least a 2-inch stem. If you do use a candle, you want a pumpkin that is at least 9-inches tall.
2. Draw pattern on pumpkin first, before carving. Use a water-based marker so mistakes can be easily erased.

3. Cut the top of the pumpkin in the shape of a octagon (stop sign), and pull off. Use special pumpkin carving tools or sharp edged knife for best results.
4. Scoop out seeds and insides with a spoon or ice-cream scooper.
5. Carve out design. Use a potato peeler to make smaller detailed cuts.
6. Use petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to cover exposed insides of the pumpkin to help it retain moisture and last longer.
