DIRECTIONS

An indoor Treasure Hunt is the perfect way to get kids moving around and thinking on rainy days, when they are probably going stir crazy anyway.  It is up to you how difficult you make the clues and how much to spend on the treasure your kids find in the end.

The first step is to hide the "treasure" somewhere in the house.  We suggest the treasure be something they can then play with after the hunt is over; colors, legos, a new movie, a new toy, play dough, a craft set or anything your kids like to play with.  While you could also use money or candy, keep in mind you have all day to entertain them and will want to prolong this game as long as you can.

After hiding the treasure, work your way backwards with clues.  Meaning, don't start with the first clue, start with the last clue.  There are several themes you could use for your treasure hunt.

Riddles - a phrase or rhyme that gives a hint where to find the next clue.  For example, "It isnt' high, it isn't low, look in the place where the soap goes." bathroom
Puzzles - a phrase with missing words that the participant must figure out to find the next clue.  For example, "Look in the ____ ____, under the basket with the dirty clothes."  laundry room
Word Scrambles - a puzzle particpants must unscramble to learn the location of the next clue.  For example, "Your next clue is in hte icktneh."  the kitchen
Pictures - pictures taken of the final location of the treasure along with hint of where to find the next picture piece.
Music or Sounds - a sound indicating where the next clue is.  For example, a dog barking might mean to look in the dog bed, or a shower running might mean to look in the bathroom.

We reccomend at least 5 clues to find the final treasure, but you can make this game as long or as short as you want. The hardest part is setting up the clues, but once in place, you will love watching your kids go from room to room looking for the treasure!
