OPENING NIGHT:
Houston Family Arts Center has mastered The Wizard of OZ. The plays holds very close to the movie including favorite songs like "We're Off To See The Wizard", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", and "If I Only Had A Brain/Heart/The Nerve". Audiences will also love the special effects with lighting and wires that make the characters fly. Timing on lines was perfect, character commitment was excellent and the use of the Berry Center space was genius. Each time the characters followed the yellow brick road, they danced out in the audience, which not only directed attention away from the scene changes, but gave everyone a chance to see up close the incredible costumes.
The play itself is very funny, with one liners targeted to adults and physical comedy for kids. Our viewing included several problems with ToTo, who nearly stole the scenes, and a set malfunction that had audiences rolling with laughter. The crew handled the hicups great and even added to the humor, showing what a high quality of actors Houston Family Arts Center finds.
The Wizard of OZ is a classic story and a perfect addition to the HFAC family of shows. With expert thespians and beautiful sets, families should not miss the opportunity to experience theatre at its finest!
