Synopsis:
Zathura...not sure what the name means, but certainly sounds exciting. Let me first start by saying this is not a movie for small children. The movie has a PG rating and as a mother, I would not recommend any child younger than 12 see this movie. The script includes the use of the word "d*ck" and a slang word for "b%tch" and will give small children nightmares of ugly lizard aliens. It is scary with quite a bit of action. Boys will probably like it more than girls.
With typical sibling rivalry as the focus, the movie starts with two brothers sharing time with their father and not liking it. There parent’s divorce seems to be taking a toll on the boys and the older brother blames the younger brother for all the problems in their family. The little brother is struggling to fit in and gets attention by being annoying. Once he starts to play Zathura, there is no turning back and the boys must evade meteors, robots, gravity, aliens and each other, all while in space. They pull the card that brings an astronaut their way and gives them some helpful incite to finishing the game and dealing with one another. With out giving away the twists and turns, you can rest assured they finish the game and are a better family in the end.
This is a great movie for kids dealing with divorce and their siblings, and will leave adults feeling like they saw an exciting fantasy movie. It certainly pushes the limit of a PG rating, but worth seeing with your older children.
